About
This is a collection of illustrations I have made unrelated to any larger project. I make these as a hobby and to practice my drawing skills. Typically, I draw digitally using raster graphics.

My Process

Sketching and Inspiration
First, I come up with a fun concept that I want to draw. In this case, I imagined a vampire based on a deer instead of a bat. Then, I create a basic skeleton. This is where I work with proportion and make sure the posing is where I want it to be.
Over the posed skeleton, I create a rough sketch of the final design. This is where I look at references to pull inspiration from, in this case, deer with chronic wasting disease.

Coloring
In this step, I create layers of single colors. Each contiguous object I create as its own layer. This makes it easy to make adjustments to the larger color scheme of the piece.

Lighting and Shadows
Here, I decide on where I want to place the light source to capture the look I’m after. Once I do that, I choose a color for highlights, brighter highlights, shadows, and the darkest shadows.
With my lighting colors selected, I begin using the light and shadows to sculpt the physical form of the piece. This is where I really settle on the style of the piece, painterly, in this case.

Finishing Touches
In this final step, I add smaller details and polish up the sharpest and deepest shadows and highlights. I always try to add detail like the raindrops on the vampire’s skin, since those are the little touches that add so much character to art.
